Gel Memory Foam Mattresses

Gel Memory foam mattresses were originally developed in 1966 under a contract by NASA’s Ames Research Center to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. Ames scientist Chiharu Kubokawa and Charles A. Yost of the Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation were major contributors to this project. The temperature-sensitive memory foam was initially referred to as “slow spring back foam”. The foam has an open-cell solid structure that matches pressure against it, yet slowly springs back to its original shape.

Gel Memory foam mattresses moved from NASA to the medical field for many years because many patients are forced to lie immobile in their beds for extended periods of time. The pressure of a conventional mattress over time was very unhealthy. Gel Memory foam mattresses relieve some of that pressure.

The cost of a gel memory foam mattress was initially very expensive and it still is if you shop at a retail mattress store in Pottstown. However with the advent of new technology and mass production the cost of gel memory foam mattresses has dropped significantly over the past few years.

We sell our gel memory foam mattresses in our mattress warehouse store in Pottstown for about 1/2 of what you would pay in a retail mattress store in Pottstown.

One of the challenges with memory foam mattresses is the tendency to hold body heat. This leads to sweating and an uncomfortable night’s sleep.

Several years ago a new type of memory foam was introduced into the market. There is now a layer of gel infused memory foam placed as the top layer in many memory foam mattresses. This layer of gel is a cooling layer that wicks heat away from your body and disperses it so that it does not build up in the mattress.

Buyer beware, NOT ALL MEMORY FOAM IS THE SAME. There are 1000’s of different types of memory foam. I often have customers state they like or dislike memory foam without even testing it out in our mattress warehouse in Pottstown.

Memory foam is no different than other mattresses when it comes to testing them out. Lay down on the mattress the same way you sleep at home, side, back, front etc…

You might be surprised at how it feels after a few minutes.
